Zee Secures Exclusive FIFA Soccer Rights for India, Through 2034
Zee Entertainment Enterprises has solidified its position in the Indian sports broadcasting landscape by securing the exclusive rights to 39 FIFA soccer events. This landmark agreement, effective from 2026 through 2034, is the first collaboration between Zee and FIFA and promises to bring a wealth of top-tier football content to Indian audiences. The extensive package encompasses major competitions like the FIFA World Cup in 2026 and 2030, as well as the FIFA Women's World Cup in 2027, alongside a variety of youth and futsal tournaments for both male and female athletes, and dedicated documentary series.
This comprehensive coverage is set to kick off on June 11 with the opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2026, which will be accessible across Zee's newly launched suite of linear sports channels: Unite8 Sports 1 and Unite8 Sports 1 HD for Hindi commentary, and Unite8 Sports 2 and Unite8 Sports 2 HD for English. Additionally, content will be available for streaming on Zee's digital platform, ZEE5. Punit Goenka, CEO of Zee Entertainment Enterprises, emphasized the company's belief in football's long-term potential in India, citing its broad appeal across different regions and demographics. FIFA's Chief Business Officer, Romy Gai, highlighted the strategic importance of the Indian market, driven by its large, enthusiastic young population.
The deal represents a pivotal moment following intricate negotiations for broadcast rights in India. Previously, FIFA had initially sought a higher fee for the 2026 and 2030 World Cups, later adjusting its expectations. While financial details of the current agreement with Zee remain undisclosed, this acquisition significantly strengthens Zee's sports offerings, which already include cricket, kabaddi, badminton, wrestling, and combat sports. This strategic move aims to tap into football's burgeoning popularity in India, transforming its underleveraged potential into a mass appeal for millions of viewers across the nation, with the 2026 World Cup serving as an initial crucial benchmark for this ambitious venture.
The acquisition of these extensive FIFA rights by Zee Entertainment Enterprises marks a significant stride in expanding the reach of international football within India, a nation increasingly embracing diverse sports. This strategic investment not only caters to the growing passion for soccer among Indian audiences but also promises to foster a more vibrant and inclusive sports culture. By making world-class football accessible through dedicated channels and streaming platforms, Zee is poised to inspire a new generation of fans and athletes, contributing positively to the global tapestry of sports enthusiasm and participation.
